12 of the best drives in America for a rented supercar

A supercar on the wrong road is just an expensive traffic jam. On the right one, it's a day you'll remember for years. These are the drives we'd plan a rental around, with the best time to go.

The coasts

  • Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur, California. Cliffs, bridges and ocean views. Spring and fall have the clearest days. California guide
  • The Overseas Highway, Florida. Miami to Key West over 42 bridges. Winter and spring are ideal. Florida guide
  • US-101 along the Oregon coast. Sea stacks and windy headlands, best from June to September. Oregon guide
  • Ocean Drive, Newport, Rhode Island. Gilded Age mansions and rocky shoreline on a short, easy loop. Rhode Island guide

The mountains

  • Tail of the Dragon, North Carolina and Tennessee. 318 curves in 11 miles. Drive it carefully; it's heavily patrolled. Tennessee guide
  • Million Dollar Highway, Colorado. Silverton to Ouray, with steep drops and few guardrails. Summer only. Colorado guide
  • Beartooth Highway, Montana and Wyoming. Switchbacks up to Yellowstone's northeast entrance, open roughly late May to October. Montana guide
  • Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina. Overlooks for hundreds of miles. Low speed limits, so it's a cruise, not a race. Virginia guide

The desert and the city

  • Valley of Fire Highway, Nevada. Bright red sandstone an hour from the Las Vegas Strip. Go October to May. Nevada guide
  • Red Rock Scenic Byway, Arizona. Short but stunning, through Sedona's red rock country. Arizona guide
  • Twisted Sisters, Texas Hill Country. A famous loop of tight curves west of San Antonio. Texas guide
  • Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. Skyline on one side, Lake Michigan on the other. Go early on a summer weekend. Chicago guide

Before you go

  • Check your mileage allowance. Some of these drives are long.
  • Ask whether you can take the car out of state, and confirm your insurance covers you everywhere you'll drive.
  • Check for seasonal closures. Mountain passes and park roads often close in winter.
