Do I need my own insurance to rent an exotic car?
Most exotic rental companies require your own full-coverage auto policy. Here's what that means, what to ask your insurer, and why credit card coverage usually won't work.

Usually, yes. Most exotic rental companies require your own full-coverage auto policy (liability plus collision) that extends to rental cars, and they verify it before pickup.
Insurance is the part of renting a supercar that surprises people most. With a regular rental car, you can buy the counter coverage and go. With exotic cars, most companies won't sell you a policy at all. They ask for yours.
What "full coverage" means
When a rental company asks for full coverage, they want two things on your policy:
- Liability, which pays for damage and injuries you cause to other people. Every state has a minimum; see the numbers in our state guides.
- Collision, which pays to repair the car you're driving after a crash. This is the part that matters for a $250,000 rental.
Comprehensive coverage (theft, weather, vandalism) is often expected too.
The questions to ask your insurance company
- Does my policy extend to rental cars?
- Is there a limit on the value of the rental car it covers?
- Does it exclude exotic, luxury or high-performance vehicles?
- Does it cover loss of use and diminished value? (Rental companies can charge for the days a damaged car can't be rented, and for the drop in its resale value.)
- Can you email me my declarations page? (The rental company will want to see it.)
Why credit card coverage usually won't work
Many credit cards include rental car coverage, but nearly all of them exclude exotic and high-value cars. Brands like Lamborghini, Ferrari and Rolls-Royce are commonly listed as excluded. Don't count on your card for a supercar rental.
How rental companies check your insurance
Most exotic companies don't sell insurance. You bring a full-coverage policy that extends to the rental, and they verify it before delivery. That's also why a few companies can rent to drivers 18 and up: the requirement is the right insurance, not a birthday. See age requirements.
If something happens
Report it to the rental company right away, take photos, and call your insurer. Read our guide on what happens if you damage a rented exotic car before you drive.
Frequently asked questions
Will my credit card cover an exotic car rental?
Usually not. Most credit card rental benefits exclude exotic, luxury and high-value cars. Read your card's benefit guide, but plan on using your own auto policy.
Does my personal car insurance cover a rented Lamborghini?
It might. Many personal policies extend to rental cars, but some cap coverage at the value of your own car or exclude high-value or exotic rentals. Call your insurer and ask before you book.
